Textiles + Materiality Newsletter

November 15th, 2024

Dear Cluster Members,

I hope you are all doing well as we inch towards the end of term. We have had some beautiful workshops, events, and ideation within and without the cluster, and are hoping to continue conversations across our membership and to the larger community both now and in the winter months. Please see the information below with some important information, news, and etcetera.

All-Cluster Meeting November 22nd 4:30-5:30

We will host our all-cluster meeting in the Cluster Commons and over Zoom on Friday November 22nd from 4:30 to 5:30 PM. This meeting will include member check-ins, student research presentations, exciting news from our co-director Miranda Smitheram, and an invitation to all new members to introduce themselves and their research through images and brought materials. We will also discuss the Close Reading Group organized by Tori McBeath on “Care, Ethics, Craft” and we invite members to discuss their own interests for organizing cluster events, workshops, talks. We hope that cluster members can show up either in person or via zoom. Link to be sent out closer to the date.

Pointcarré Renewal

We have had our Point Carré software licence renewed for another year, generously donated by Pointcarre, which will allow us to continue our wonderful research-creation and prototyping work on the Jacquard Loom. Thank you, Genevieve Moisan and Marc Beaulieu, for securing this vital cluster tool.

Community Dye Pot

Community Dye Pot is an invitation to interested T&M members to both participate and host a recurring Community Dye Pot with a monthly botanical dye. We will provide materials, resources and space at MaSH Lab for this community activation. Miranda Smitheram will start us off with red amaranth and is looking for keen dyers to take turns leading the sessions after. Please email textiles.materiality@concordia.ca

Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction Panel at the National Gallery of Canada

We are honoured to announce that T&M faculty members Dr. Miranda Smitheram and Dr. Elaine Cheasley Paterson will be participating at the Woven Histories: Textiles and Modern Abstraction exhibition panel at the National Gallery of Canada in February 2025. A parallel event will be run by PhD cluster members at Milieux’ Atelier Space, stay tuned for more information.

Craft Café

Lastly, we have planned an end of semester Craft Cafe, early December, please come and enjoy tea and handwork or conversation in community with us on Friday December 6th 4-6 PM.
